Rock salt works by lowering the freezing point of moisture, once snow falls onto rock salted roads, it stops ice from forming and melts any existing snow and ice already on the roads. Although we often refer to rock salt as grit and gritting the roads, it is actually large rocks of salt which are obtained from mines.
Rock salt has to be applied to roads and drives at the right time and timing really is everything. If roads are gritted too early, the rock salt is likely to be blown away and be useless, if rock salt isn’t applied early enough, the roads are already iced and the rock salt has to work harder in order to be effective.
